Taking medication

Okay I feel like too many doctors and gastric bypass recipients do not know about this so please spread this to others that have had the surgery that may not know this.

I was taking anti depressants after my surgery and was on a very high dose of effexor which is VERY hard to come off of. Because the medication is so expensive my insurance decided to deny it after me being on it for quite some time, well because you cannot come off of it cold turkey I had some bad withdrawals.. I learned not long after that I only had to take such high of a dose because it was the extended release tablets. After you have gastric bypass your body will not get the full effect of medication if it is the extended release. Because food etc is passed through your pouch so quickly the medication is before you can get its full effect. If you are on any medications, especially anti-depressants and having to take a higher dose this is probably why. I have since switched to quick release on my medications and take 1 3x a day of each and it makes a huge difference, I am on a much lower dose and feel sooooo much better than before. It is up to us to keep the medicine in our systems now, well to help our body do it. Most doctors do not think about this when prescribing medication, which is sad because many people have had this surgery. I think doctors need to have a neon sticker that says gastric bypass like they do for alergies etc.

I hope this helps another person to be able to lower their medication and actually get the effects from it that they are supposed to get. Also don't forget to take your vitamins!

dumping

I have learned that many people do not realize what dumping is. Many believe that dumping is throwing up, however that is not what it is, it can be that, but that is not the only way you can dump after gastric bypass. If you eat too much fat, sugar, or even milk sometimes, anything that makes you feel not so good afterwards; you will usually dump. When your heart rate speeds up and you feel tired and just overall yucky that is dumping. Chinese food is a big thing for many people after surgery that makes them really sick, it is fried and full of fat, not to mention the rice is overly filling.

The best thing to do is not to get yourself to the point of dumping, but coming from someone that still has that issue 6+ years out, it's gonna happen. Feel blessed that the bad things make you dump because many people can tolerate just about anything in a year or so out of surgery which can and will cause weight gain again. I have learned the best thing to do when dumping is to lay down and take a quick nap, if you can't do that try to find somewhere where you can sit down and just relax until it passes. Also drink water, water will help flush it through your pouch quicker.

Hope everyone is having a great day and please remember that gastric bypass is only a tool and you have to make a life long decision to change to a healthier lifestyle for it to work.

Getting pregnant after having my surgery

So we did what we were supposed to and waited for 1 year exactly before getting off of my birth control. I mean to the date!! lol I started charting and doing my temps to see exactly when ovulating etc.. We had tried for 5 years before gastric bypass to get pregnant, went through tons of clomid, from the lowest to the highest and nothing worked, no ovulating, no maybe, no nothing! I was in denial a lot of times that it was actually my weight. I think when you are that overweight it hurts more to realize that you are sabotaging your own chances at being a mom, rather than thinking that maybe your body just isn't working just because. It was definitely hard to see those sticks always say that I wasn't ovulating etc.. soo when we got off of the birth control and I started ovulating right away I was sooo excited! I had done lots of research over those 5 years so I learned a lot about charting and ovulation signs etc. i asked my doc to give me a round of clomid to use after 3 months of no baby and charting.. actually it was around 2 1/2 months and after all we had been through he said sure without hesitation! That first round we conceived Kaytlin! My miracle baby in my eyes!! I was sooooo excited to find out that we were preggers with Kayt. I want to add this, if you are thinking about having children after gastric bypass please please please wait until you are done with your weight loss, and able to get in enough food for yourself and the baby. I have talked to many women that got pregnant too soon and it was VERY hard to get enough nutrients in for both themselves and the baby. After having Kaytlin I asked my doc for another round of clomid at 2 1/2 months after Kayt was born. Rob (my husband) had no idea I was already going to start it.. he knew I was going to just didn't know when lol. I did my charting etc and realized we had missed the ovulation a littl eand thought for sure that I wasn't going to be pregnant.. but went out and got dollar tree pee sticks and sure enough just 7 days after ovulation they showed a positive!! I wrote on the mirror in the bathroom... Baby morton #2 due March 2008.. for Rob to wake up and see first thing in the morning.. LOL he wasn't mad or anything that I had taken the clomid already because we had already planned on it. So yea Robbie was quick and easy to make lol.. they are right when they say you are fertile mertile right after having a baby. I don't recommend having them this close to anyone.. If I could do it over again I would probably wait until Kayt was at least 1 or 2 to have Robbie because it is pretty much like having twins and is not easy.

If you need any information about ovulation or charting or anything having to do with that please don't hesistate to ask me, I dont mind talking about any of this to anyone.

Baked Chicken that tastes good and is quick to fix

Right after I had my surgery I wanted to come up with ways to make dinner easily, things that we both would like, things that I could eat, and they had to have protein! The best thing that I became addicted to was my baked chicken.
What you will need:
*bonelesss skinless chicken breasts, or tenders
*30 minute marinade
*seasoned meat tenderizer
*seasoned pepper

Heat your oven to 375
Make sure you have defrosted what you are going to use and adjust your cooking time if you use more or less chicken.
I liked to use the lemon pepper marinade the most, it was my favorite! Put your meat on either a chopping board or a plate and if you are using the breasts make sure to cut them up like tenders. I always cut the fat off of either, i cant stand the fat on my chicken! Sprinkle both the pepper and the tenderizer on the chicken and pour marinade all over the chicken, then if you don't have the nail tenderizer that I posted on here use forks, tenderize the crap out of the chicken, it helps get the flavors in the meat big time! I love my tenderizer and greatly recommend it for any meat! Turn the meat over and do the same thing on the other size. You can either put this meat in a bowl and let it marinade for awhile in the fridge, or you can put it on a cookie sheet and cook it now. The flavor is going to be in it already. Oh yea if you use the breasts I usually use 3-4 of them cut up without the fat.. with the tenders I use 4-6 of them. Put your meat laid out on the cookie sheet so that they are not touching and leave the excess marinade on them.. if enough doesn't stay on them I usually pour a little on top, not too much because the marinade itself will burn a little if there is too much. Cook the chicken for 20 minutes and it comes out tasty and not chewy! It is sooo good and is good for the whole family. You can use any marinade you want and cook it just like this. I would usually add some corn and potatos for Rob, but just leave the taters out cause they are too filling and you want the protein!

protein smoothy to die for!

Okay this is an easy smoothy to make and one that I came up with on my own.. I have actually made it at a previous job on a friday for the office and everyone loved it and actually asked if i would make it every Friday lol..
You will need:
*apple juice flavoring from wal mart in the little powder packet with no sugar that you add to a bottle of water
*1 bottle of water
*the whey protein listed on here to the left.. Vanilla is the flavor you want..
*Frozen fruit mix, I like the great value at wal mart with pineapple, mango, etc..

Get out your blender and after making the apple juice flavored water pour in 1 cup of that to the blender, add 1 scoop of the protein, 1 cup of the frozen fruit and blend. That's it guys! It tastes awesome and gives you your protein in a yummy fashion.. You can add a little more of the apple water to make it less thick, or more fruit to make it thicker, or even more of each to make more smoothie.

12-22-04

I had gastric bypass on December 22, 2004 and was in the hospital until Christmas Eve. I went in weighing 278 lbs. My main reason for wanting to have the surgery was because I really wanted to have children and my weight was keeping me from ovulating. I tried many diets and went on a doctors diet and still only lost 10lbs and remained.. it was very frustrating. My self esteem was not too bad, but of course not as good as it could have been.. I have always felt like a skinny beautiful blond stuck in a fat person's body. I was and am still happy with my decision to have gastric bypass.

I am now 5 years post-op and about 30 lbs over where I should be for my build. I have a large rib cage and big wrists etc, I am big boned.. at 170lbs I wore a size 8, and looked great... that is where I need to be. I got pregnant with my daughter in 2006 and had some complications.. We don't know if it was from being post-op or just one of those things.. She came out very quickly on Jan 22, 2007 from 1" dilated to 10 within 3 hours, pushed out in 2 pushes. The doctor said her umbilical cord was VERY long, and even notated it on the chart. After having my daughter we thought it would take a while to get pregnant again so we started trying for baby #2 right away.. it only took one try :) To our surprise I became pregnant with my son when my daughter was 4 1/2 months old. I might need to mention that after having Kaytlin I got down to 195 lbs, but during the pregnancy I got upto 220. Since I did get pregnant so quicklly I gained 60lbs with my pregnancy with my son. Luckily I am back down to 200-205 now... but it was a struggle for a while to keep it there.

I will post more later, there is a lot that goes with this but I don't want to give away all the goods in the first post.. :)
